My first experience with drawing the Angels came when a friends Mother had a heart attack. Sis, that’s her name, had a heart attack on the 1st year anniversary of her husbands death. Her daughter

Cindy and I were and are still very close.

Her attack hit me very hard. I as usual sat sketching at our camp ground as always.

As I kept thinking about Cindy and her Mom, I started sketching eyes, then the face and hair. The wings seemed to just come out of the paper.

When I drew people I usually gave them light shaded hair.

It seemed easier to define the hair that way. This one didn’t seem right with light hair.

I kept working on it, Thinking of Sis the whole time. Praying for her well being.

As the picture evolved the hair got darker and darker.

When it was finished the hair was coal black.

When we returned home I gave the picture to Cindy to give to her Mom.

Her mouth fell open. She told me the Angel I drew looked as her Mom looked as a young girl.

From that point on, Angels were my focal point in sketching.

I drew many "healing angels" from that point on.

As a matter of fact if I sat down and tried to draw an angel just for the sake of drawing an angel, I couldn’t. They never got right, until 1998.

For some reason as I sat one day sketching, this angel seemed to come out of the paper. Then a second angel as well. I was so excited.

Angel's gaze can enthrall

I couldn't escape her mesmerizing glance. As I moved across the room, her eyes followed me wherever I went. It was a bit creepy at first, yet quite intriguing.

The long-haired angel staring back at me was created by Valley View artist Susan K. Sallada. During a recent visit to her home, she laughed as she watched me try to avoid being captured in the angel's line of vision.

Sue is donating the original pastel blue, chalk drawing and all of the money made from prints and proofs to the Rotary Foundation. The Hegins-Valley View Rotary will be selling 500 limited-edition, hand-signed and numbered prints for $20 each and 50 artist proofs for $30 each as a foundation fundraiser.

Sallada, who also serves as the local club's secretary, began creating the angels as get-well wishes for friends.

Her original drawing - it features an angel releasing a dove -will be auctioned off at the Rotary District 7370 Convention Saturday at the Inn at Reading.

This is the first time the local group has tried a print sale, according to Roy C. Kissinger, Rotary Foundation chairman for the club and district.

"There are so many people who don't know what to buy for someone who has everything. Well, this is it," said Kissinger, of Klingerstown. "I can guarantee they don't have one of these."

Call Sallada at 682-9568 or Doris Edwards at 682-3493 to order.

The Rotary Foundation helps promote world peace and understanding. Among its projects are Ambassadorial Scholarships, where student within the district can study abroad; group-study exchanges, where business people who are non-Rotarians may join with one Rotary leader to shadow people in similar professions in other countries; and matching grants for service projects.

A team from India will relate experiences during an invitation-only dinner presentation at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Valley View Firehouse. Local families will host the Indian visitors next week.

The story behind this angel is amazing. At least it is to me. All of the Angels I had drawn up to this point were meant for someone special who was ill. Whenever I would sit down to sketch and angel just to sketch one, I couldnt do it. They wouldnt get right. Never suited me. UNTIL this one. Then after this one was another one which I shall post in another message.

After completion of these two angels I was afforded the opportunity to put them in a local fair competition. I was awarded a first prize for this angel and 2nd for the other one. BUT the truly amazing story just begins.

When I went to pick up the angels I was handed a piece of paper with a name and phone number of a woman who wished to contact me. She told me she was fascinated with my drawings. She is a healer. I was pleased to have someone notice their eyes, their personality.. but most of all their power.

This is the only one of my drawings of angels I have in my home. I do have some that I have painted but this is the only charcoal one.

I have had some people who were more intune with angels tell me she spoke to them. Those of you that know its possible may hear her as well. Even if you dont, her gaze will give you peace and serenity. God Bless you.

Dawn's Angel
This angel was painted for a friend who was ill.
She was flown via medical helicopter to the hospital from being in cardiac arrest.
She too is alive and well as you read this.
When I draw or paint any of these angels I am saying prayers for those to whom they are meant for.
I start with the eyes first, as the eyes are the mirror to the soul.
I have no preconceived idea of what they will look like until they are finished.
May you enjoy and find peace as you gaze into her eyes.

MOMS HEALING ANGEL

This charcoal sketch is more then just a picture of an angel. As you gaze into her eyes you can see her power as she follows you around the room.

I drew this angel during a period in my Moms life of great stress and ill health. She had pancreatic cancer.

Four years pryor to this she had endometrian cancer and was operated on near home. The hospital was about an hours drive from home.  She was in for five days.

This time she was 2 1/2 hours drive from home. She was in for 21 1/2 days. I could only go to see her twice during the week and every weekend. It didnt feel right having her so far from home and family so I drew this angel to keep her company. I took her at the hospital (the angel). She was a great comfort to my Mom and I do believe speeding her recovery as well.

That was 6 years ago. She is still with us. Pancreaticc cancer is a deadly cancer with very few survivors. I thank God Mom is one of them.

To the Unsung Heros in our Communities

This painting was done for all those who put their lives in danger for others. For those who are there at the sound of a pager going off. To serve and protect their communities.
Many of them volunteers who train endlessly without a monetary payment for their time. These people are selfless.

When you see one, please walk up to them.. not while they are doing their job..  but when you see them tell them thank you. They will be overwhelmed when you do.

You see the only reason they do this is to give back to their world and to yours their time, ability, caring. The usual mind set of .. I'm not doing it unless I get paid.. or .. I dont have the time..  or why should I care..  " is foreign to them. Hours of training for any situation which may arise.

You see its not just fires but also hazardous material incidents, automobile accidents, blocked roadways, many reasons. Aiding police in searches and protecting crime scenes. Diverting traffic away from a potentially dangerous area. Protecting the fire fighters and the fire scene. Saving those who may be trapped in a fire, in a wrecked car, a demolished building due to a storm. Standing out in the middle of the night in all weather serving their communities without fail. So you can sleep well and have peace in the knowledge someone is there to help you when you need it. You can be sure the Angels are with them at all times.

That is why I painted this scene.  I gave this to my husband who has been involved with our local fire house for over 25 years. We both still participate. Now our daughter does as well, by her own choosing. I thank God for allowing us to serve Him in this manner and pray He will always keep us, as well as everyone else safe and under His loving care, no matter what happens
