My first experience with drawing the Angels came when a friends Mother had a heart attack. Sis, that’s her name, had a heart attack on the 1st year anniversary of her husbands death. Her daughter
Cindy and I were and are still very close.
Her attack hit me very hard. I as usual sat sketching at our camp ground as always.
As I kept thinking about Cindy and her Mom, I started sketching eyes, then the face and hair. The wings seemed to just come out of the paper.
When I drew people I usually gave them light shaded hair.
It seemed easier to define the hair that way. This one didn’t seem right with light hair.
I kept working on it, Thinking of Sis the whole time. Praying for her well being.
As the picture evolved the hair got darker and darker.
When it was finished the hair was coal black.
When we returned home I gave the picture to Cindy to give to her Mom.
Her mouth fell open. She told me the Angel I drew looked as her Mom looked as a young girl.
From that point on, Angels were my focal point in sketching.
I drew many "healing angels" from that point on.
As a matter of fact if I sat down and tried to draw an angel just for the sake of drawing an angel, I couldn’t. They never got right, until 1998.
For some reason as I sat one day sketching, this angel seemed to come out of the paper. Then a second angel as well. I was so excited.

Angel's gaze can enthrall
I couldn't escape her mesmerizing glance. As I moved across the room, her eyes followed me wherever I went. It was a bit creepy at first, yet quite intriguing.
The long-haired angel staring back at me was created by Valley View artist Susan K. Sallada. During a recent visit to her home, she laughed as she watched me try to avoid being captured in the angel's line of vision.
Sue is donating the original pastel blue, chalk drawing and all of the money made from prints and proofs to the Rotary Foundation. The Hegins-Valley View Rotary will be selling 500 limited-edition, hand-signed and numbered prints for $20 each and 50 artist proofs for $30 each as a foundation fundraiser.
Sallada, who also serves as the local club's secretary, began creating the angels as get-well wishes for friends.
Her original drawing - it features an angel releasing a dove -will be auctioned off at the Rotary District 7370 Convention Saturday at the Inn at Reading.
This is the first time the local group has tried a print sale, according to Roy C. Kissinger, Rotary Foundation chairman for the club and district.
"There are so many people who don't know what to buy for someone who has everything. Well, this is it," said Kissinger, of Klingerstown. "I can guarantee they don't have one of these."
Call Sallada at 682-9568 or Doris Edwards at 682-3493 to order.
The Rotary Foundation helps promote world peace and understanding. Among its projects are Ambassadorial Scholarships, where student within the district can study abroad; group-study exchanges, where business people who are non-Rotarians may join with one Rotary leader to shadow people in similar professions in other countries; and matching grants for service projects.
A team from India will relate experiences during an invitation-only dinner presentation at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Valley View Firehouse. Local families will host the Indian visitors next week.
